iOS, Android, OSX etc are all Linux/Unix based and they don't struggle with games per sé, so to to condemn it for that would be a potential mistake? You're right to be concerned about your back catalogue, but do you think that Valve haven't considered that, if indeed these rumours (which are pretty persistent) are true?
Obviously gaming on both mac & pc i'm all too aware of the problems with porting games designed for windows across to mac, (the ports are often shit) but they're improving in this aspect. The reason Valve are even looking at this (as i understand) is that both OSX and now Windows are becoming increasingly 'closed systems' - MS & Apple don't want anything on your system that they don't know about/have ok'd - so having 'Valve OS' where they can do what they like must surely be an attractive proposition for them, and one other games devs have already talked about in positive terms. In fact it would probably be a huge plus for the indie game community. The struggle will be tempting the 'big boys' across - a lot of the big games still don't make it across to mac as an example (but a lot of this is due to the fact the machines have never been marketed as games machines) - but with a custom built valve machine it might tempt a few more to take the plunge. What they don't want to be landed with is 80% dodgy ports of games from other systems - it was the death of the saturn, caused the original Xbox lots of issues, and hampered the PS3 early doors in this gen. This is their biggest challenge for me if they are going to pull it off, but launching with a game such as Half life 3 would be a step in the right direction - just not sure it'd be enough to pull 'full pc gamers' in, or convince console gamers to make the leap.
I've actually held off buying a new PC whilst i wait & see how this one pans out...
